A straight-up beast. At least, that’s my description of him. Of course, I may be a bit biased since I’ve known him for the last five years. I’ve watched him train like a mad man. I have wrestled him on countless occasions. I once watched him do a set of 10 dips with a 90-pound dumbbell attached to a belt around his waist. He’s the stuff of a legend. So why have so few wrestling fans known about him until lately?

What happens when life collides with wrestling? My son Beacon was born two weeks early on July 19th, 2014 at 9:01 am. Dad made it just in time. Beacon’s original due date was August 3rd. In preparation for the World Championships, our national team usually chooses a tournament in late July or early August to compete in as a tune-up event.

100. The century mark. In sports, that number signifies a milestone of achievement, frequently used as a barometer of success. Since stepping off of the big stage in Philadelphia after winning my second NCAA Championship in 2011, I have wrestled in 104 international freestyle matches. I’ve stepped up to the line 104 times, and have had my hand raised 102 times.
